I was invited to review Sexy Fish and my food was complimentary. I was not paid to attend and was not under contractual obligation to write this blog post or create content on any platform.
Random weekday lunches aren’t a regular occurrence for Mr S and I, he rarely has time to be torn away from his desk… but joining me to review the express lunch Kuikku menu at Sexy Fish was the perfect way to tempt him.
He doesn’t work far from the Asian seafood restaurant so meeting me there for his lunch hour wouldn’t leave him late back for work.
The interior of Sexy Fish have become quite iconic (dark and sultry as the name suggests), designed by Martin Brudnizki Design Studio with incredible artwork by Damien Hirst, Frank Gehry and Michael Roberts. Sexy mermaids, a waterfall behind the bar and large fish sculptures set this place apart from other London restaurants and you can see why it’s become one of the most dazzling venues in town.
The main concept of the Kuikku menu is four dishes per person for £36 each… all served in about an hour. Personally I’m not a fan of all the dishes coming at once in the usual style of an express menu but at Sexy Fish the dishes are still staggered so you don’t have a crowded table nor are you left with food going cold as you struggle to get through a banquet. It may be express but at no point do they make you feel rushed.
Though primarily a fish restaurant (obvs!) there’s plenty on the Kuikku menu for meat lovers and vegetarians too. Our eight dishes were a mix of all three starting with spicy yellowtail maki as Sexy Fish is well known for top notch sushi.
Warm mushroom and shishito pepper salad isn’t something I might have thought of ordering but I loved the warm, umami salad and the spice from the peppers.
Parsnip and red chilli tempura was delicious and light while grilled prawns were simple yet perfectly cooked with a touch of spice.
Steamed sea bass with coriander and chilli was just beautifully cooked and simply flaked apart in our chopsticks… charred baby chicken with tofu added some meat to the table and we also very much enjoyed the prawn gyoza and salmon teriyaki with yuzu hollandaise. We’d both arrived hungry and had worried that four small plates each wouldn’t be enough… but actually it really was more than enough. We were full after the main meal but desserts are also included in the price with the options of chocolate brownie or a fruit plate.
I personally thought that the fruit plate was a little thin on the ground but the warm brownie served with sorbet, biscuit and raspberry was the perfect finale for an excellent lunch.
I seriously recommend the new express Kuikku menu at Sexy for a lunch that’s pure indulgence but won’t leave you late for work, nor will it break the bank. A big thank you Sexy Fish for having me!
