After a lovely day spent having lunch at Galvin at Windows (more on that later) and a bit of birthday shopping with my mum I arrived home to this…
A huge birthday haul from Mr Silver!
And my first ever ‘Wife’ birthday card. 🙂 Mr S had a very happy wife as a result…
As well as receiving a gorgeous bunch of flowers from my husband, I received a flower delivery from the lovely people from Appleyard Flowers. The gorgeous boutique florist creates a new range of floral design for each season and occasion and they had asked me to check out their new Christmas flowers. I chose the Gold Leaf Bouquet because the white roses reminded me on my wedding bouquet 🙂
The flowers were very beautiful and arrived in time to be enjoyed on my birthday! With the pretty red berries and golden leaves they were certainly very festive!
When me and sister were little we always got an ‘unbirthday’ present on each other’s birthday so that we wouldn’t feel too jealous of the attention the other one was getting. The ‘unbirthday’ is a great tradition, stemming from Alice in Wonderland because although you only get one birthday, you get 364 unbirthdays… Anyway as a further thank you for your support I’ve collaborated with Appleyard to give my readers an ‘unbirthday’ present. Use the code BLOG40 to get a 40% discount off any of the flowers on their website for a perfect present for birthday, Christmas or as a reward to yourself!*
After admiring my beautiful flowers, Mr S was keen to crack the bubbly open. We love having a glass of champers before going out but when’s just the two of us we usually get a mini bottle so that we don’t over do it before going out…
Mr S had bought a lovely bottle of Ruinart Blanc de Blancs so that we could start the night in style!
And now fully equipped with a glass of champers in hand I opened my main present from Mr S.
This totally beautiful Burberry coat.Mr Silver is a man of taste, but a coat is a difficult thing to get right and we’d chosen it together the previous weekend. But I hadn’t been allowed to wear it until the day of my birthday. Being petite I find it hard to get coats, the sleeves are always too long and things like that but this coat fitted like a dream, like it was made for me.
While in Burberry, I spied this gorgeous bag…
…electric blue being one of my favourite colours and my lovely and generous mum, Susan SilverSpoon, bought it for me as a birthday present.**
Outfit complete, we headed to our dining destination,
Roka Mayfair
Mr Silver and I love Roka in Charlotte Street, it’s one of our favourite restaurants, and we were keen to try the new one in Mayfair. Well, it’s new-ish as another Roka has now opened in Aldwych.
The interior of the restaurant is super-cool. There’s a big open kitchen in the centre and patrons dine at the counter or at the carved wooden tables in the restaurant. I’d expected the Mayfair branch to be very similar to the Charlotte Street one and, while the decor was similar, the vibe is quite different. Charlotte Street feels quite casual, while the low lighting and intimate feel in Mayfair makes it feel chic, sexy and seductive… the perfect place for a birthday date night.
Look at my big smile in anticipation of wonderful sushi!!
And Mr S knows he’s about to have a very happy wife!
To continue as we’d started we ordered a bottle of Ruinart Blanc de Blancs…
It’s a gorgeously crisp champagne that we thoroughly enjoyed, though not one that we usually order.
Snacking on some edamame we perused the menu…spying a menu of caviar, wagyu and lobster I said:
‘Can we get the premium tasting menu?’
Well…it was my birthday after all…
First up is our very favourite dish, one we nearly alway order: tuna tataki, and Roka’s version has a delicious apple mustard dressing.
Next was a feather-light yellow tail  sashimi.
A beautifully presented mix platter of sashimi.
Though sushi is my favourite food, I actually find that flavours hard to describe because everything tastes very clean and fresh. But trust me, Mr S and I made yummy noises about every dish and the pictures pretty much speak for themselves.
Seared beef with truffle dressing was beautifully luxurious.
A perfect package of loveliness: black cod, crayfish and crab gyoza.
Beautifully seared scallop skewers with shiso and and wasabi.
Wagyu sushi gunkan with caviar and spring onion.
I think many people will agree, the black cod is often the highlight of a Japanese feast and Roka’s was perfection!
A delicious side dish of spicy broccoli
A total fave for Mr S, lamb cutlets with Korean spices.
And as I’m not a big red meat eater I substituted for perfectly cooked chicken skewers.
The final savoury dish was also the most filling one: a grilled lobster hot pot with crab miso butter. By now I was pretty full but fortunately I have a separate dessert stomach…
And I certainly wasn’t too full for this gorgeous dessert platter.
And I didn’t need to feel too guilty cos it was mostly fruit…
A fabulous way to end a basically perfect meal!!
A huge thank you to Mr Silver who made me feel like a total princess on my birthday…but then he makes me feel like that every day 🙂
