Summer Food at Tom’s Kitchen, Canary Wharf

Your best friend’s wedding is almost as exciting as your own; so much to talk about, planning to do and champagne to drink! I’ve mentioned my best friend Anna on my blog before, we’ve been friends since we were five and she’s my oldest friend. Of course she was one of my bridesmaids and I was honoured when she asked me to be one of hers…

As I hadn’t seen her for a few weeks, we had plenty to catch up on, she’d bought her dress, selected the invitations and now it was time for us to start planning the hen do! I had been invited to Tom’s Kitchen in Canary Wharf and it seemed the perfect opportunity for us to catch up on wedding gossip over a glass of prosecco and some good food.

I loved the bright and airy space of the restaurant and light flooded through the floor to ceiling windows illuminating the comfortable leather booths and modern wooden tables.

The restaurant complex is pretty sizeable incorporating a deli of homemade takeaway options and a bar serving cocktails and chef  Tom Aikens’ own label biodynamic wine.

There’s a simple concept at Tom’s Kitchen and that is to use fresh and seasonal ingredients to create delicious British classics; Tom and his team work with British farmers and suppliers in order to find the very best and sustainable produce to incorporate into their dishes.

I started with Jasmine cured salmon with pickled cucumber and lemon puree, firstly I was surprised at the size of the dish; I’d been expecting a few slices of salmon but I was very happy with my much more generous portion. The piece of salmon was so fresh and beautifully prepared and I loved the crunchy cucumber accompaniment.

Anna’s choice was a beef carpaccio with walnut and rocket pesto and confit tomatoes. Another beautifully light summer dish, with perfect presentation and great flavour. I knew the food would be incredible with a menu created by renowned British chef Tom Aikens; Tom has worked with many other celebrated chefs at top restaurants such as Pied a Terre, Joel Robuchon in Paris and Pierre Koffman’s La Tante Claire. He was also the youngest British chef to ever receive two Michelin stars at his restaurant, Tom Aikens in Chelsea. I visited the flagship restaurant several years ago and thought it was fabulous but it has since closed permanently. Tom now has three UK branches of Tom’s Kitchen, the other two being in Chelsea and Somerset House and he has branched out internationally, also opening in Istanbul.

For my main course I chose Gilt-Head Bream with heritage tomato salad, chicory and olives. Once again I was pleased to receive such a decent portion and the fish was beautifully seasoned and cooked and with those glorious tomatoes, it looked like sunshine on a plate! As Tom Aikens is passionate about sustainable fishing, I could also be safe in the knowledge that my fish was sustainably sourced from ethical suppliers.

Bride-to-be, Anna chose a chicken Nicoise salad, and though a rather unadventurous choice, it still looked like a very happy plate with succulent and well-seasoned chicken with a dash of #eggporn…I love eggs cooked just to the right level like this.

With a delicious lunch eaten, champagne quaffed and colour schemes and wedding flowers discussed we were pretty full from the big portions and I suggested trying a lighter dessert.

Pineapple carpaccio with an accompanying sorbet was the perfect choice…a refreshing palate cleanser that wasn’t overly sweet and rich.

I really thought Tom’s Kitchen was fabulous, it was so much more than your average British Brasserie, every dish was so perfectly cooked and presented with such great care and attention.
