Our Dream Trip to South Africa #SilverSpoononSafari

For years I’ve dreamed of visiting South Africa, seeing the beautiful landscapes, sampling the food and wine and most of all going on a Safari adventure.

Actually, this is my dream trip, though we decided not to do it for our honeymoon as I had a vision of us staying in those gorgeous huts floating about the sea in Bora Bora. Now, finally on the 18th of March, Mr S and I will be heading on our next big adventure! As you can imagine time has been allocated and spreadsheeted, hotels, restaurants and trips have all been booked and Mr S’s ‘relaxation time’ has also been planned.

I just wanted to to give you a taster of what’s to come as we set forth on our trip; let me introduce to you…SilverSpoon on Safari.

Our adventure starts in Johannesburg…

Now I’ve had plenty of forewarning that Jo’burg is not a safe place to hang out, so our plan is just to stay one night. To those of you with good knowledge of the geography of South Africa you may notice that our itinerary isn’t as easy and straightforward as it could be. This is due to flight availability via air miles and hotel availability, some of the hotels that we are staying in only have small number of rooms so we had to take the dates that we were given.

Anyway, the plan is to then fly over to Cape Town.

Here I’m looking forward to experiencing top notch restaurants, such as Test Kitchen, cocktails at sunset and checking out the night life. We also have a Cape City Tour booked to acquaint us with the streets of the City Centre and take us to the top of Table Mountain. We will also be travelling around the Cape Peninsula to discover the beautiful beaches scenery and wildlife. If we have time, I hope to make a trip to Robben Island where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for eighteen years of his twenty- seven year sentence.

The next leg of our journey takes us to the Winelands, don’t you just love that name? Oh, to live in a land of wine!

Here we’re staying in Franschhoek where we’re planning on visiting various different vineyards for tastings. I also have some restaurants with incredible views booked for lunch and I’m hoping to get a table at The Tasting Room for dinner.

Then our road trip begins as we get going for our drive along the Garden Route. Doesn’t that just sound idyllic? The route stretches around three hundred kilometres and it is known for it’s beautiful green forests and coastal lagoons.

Driving through Mossel Bay, George and Knysna we will end in Plettenberg Bay where will be staying three nights.

Here I’ve incorporated a little bit of relaxation time for Mr S, along with a visit to an animal rehabilitation centre, we also plan to enjoy the beautiful scenery and set out on a boat trip.

We’ll then head back to the coastal town of Hermanus.

Sadly it’s the wrong time of year for whale-watching but we’ll be staying in a beautiful hotel where Mr S can relax and do nothing and I can start writing up my blog posts!

We’ll then go back to Cape Town before flying off for the final part of the journey, what I’m sure will be the highlight…our safari adventure.

We’ll be dividing our time between Kruger Park and Sabi Sands, which are two very different terrains, I can’t wait to share with you all the adventures that we’ll have there and all the pictures that I hope to take…it’s one month and counting until I go!!

Have you ever been to South Africa? Do you have any tips for me?Β

  • Hi Angie, this is going to be fantastic. I travel to South Africa all the time ever since 1998 and love it so much. I recommend Table Mountain. District Six Museum. Camps Bay and Clifton for beach. Kirstenbosch Gardens. V&A Waterfront for retail therapy (& CBD of course), this is also a good spot to go on a heli flip. Sunset Beach for long beach walks. Wine tasting and picnic in either Franschhoek, Constantia or Stellenbosch area. Visit the penguins in Simons Town. My favourite restaurants in Cape Town: Planet Bar and Restaurant. The Roundhouse. Savoy Cabbage. 95 Keerom. The Test Kitchen and PotLuck Club. Have fun, Cape Town is such a beautiful city. For how long are you going to be there?

    • Wow, thanks for the detailed response and all the tips! I've already booked Test Kitchen and I'll take a look at your other suggestions.
      Thank you!!

  • What an exciting holiday to look forward to, Angie! I've never been to South Africa, but I would love to explore it. I'm sure you'll have an amazing time – it looks like you've got it very well planned and will see some incredible places! Wineland sounds my ideal place for a holiday πŸ˜‰ xxx

    • Thank you so much…I can't wait for my journey to the land of wine!
      Lots of love,
      Angie

  • Hi. I am originally from South Africa, Joburg actually, and while I agree it is not the safest place I also dont think it gets the reputation it deserves and it is not as bad as you think it will be. I think Cape Town and the Wine Route are more pretty destinations for tourists, I don't think Joburg should be skipped at the fear of being safe. If you do end up exploring Joburg further I would recommend the lion park where you can feed giraffes and play with baby lions http://www.lion-park.com/ There are great restaurants all around meat is good but seafood is great too. I am sure you will enjoy. In CT try go to a concert in Kirstenboch gardens. Enjoy your trip

    • Ah… thanks for letting me know Stacey. The Lion Park looks amazing, I can't wait to see all the animals.

I'll bear in mind the Kirstenboch Gardens too.
      Lots of love,
      Angie

  • This sounds amazing! I don't have any tips as I've never stepped foot on the continent, but you may want to chat to Kasha at LinesofEscape.com, and Mandy at EmminLondon.com who are travel blogging South Africans πŸ™‚

    • Thanks hon, I've already got some tips from Kasha, it's great having such a global network of bloggers.
      Lots of love,
      Angie

  • Oh my gosh, that sounds absolutely incredible! I've been dying to go to Cape Town/on safari for a while now so I'm looking forward to seeing how you find it (and of course, seeing all your marvellous photos!)

  • There aren't whales but there are sharks Angie. You MUST go shark cage diving while you're in Hermanus. Really! We offer small trips which means no crowding, dry wetsuits, more time in the cage and engagement with the crew.

    • Hi Kim, I would be terrified but my husband would love it!
      Lots of love,
      Angie

    • It's a brilliant outing even if you don't dive. The surface viewing is incredible too…..it's a great adventure for couples. Come on…do it!

    • Do you have a website, Karen?

  • If you haven't already booked a safari lodge we LOVED Exeter River Lodge in Sabi Sands, brilliant. So excited for you. You're going to have the time of your life!!

Hi Angie – I'm from Jo'burg and whilst I agree that it isn't the safest of prettiest place to visit, there has been a lot of regeneration in the CBD and if you have a chance, the Maboleng district and Arts on Main are worth a visit.

You have all the bases covered through, so I do hope that you get to experience the absolute beauty of the scenerary and people of South Africa! I look forward to reading your posts! Sam x

    • Oooh we're only there for a day but that sounds great. Thanks hon and I look forward to hearing about the restaurants that you visited.
